Understanding Speed Plans of Internet Service Providers

By Steven MacHill

Most people today when looking at subscribing to an internet connection are looking at high-speed internet. While there still is a limited market for dial-up service, it's definitely shrinking as DSL service is very competitively priced as the low-cost alternative for a broadband connection.

So where do you begin? Even though it's been around for 20 years, the internet technology has definitely become more sophisticated and difficult to wrap your mind around. Why not begin with a good online resource that focuses on education and internet providers online reviews.

It's good to take a bit of time to familiarize yourself with the various technologies and packages available from cable, satellite, fiber optics, wireless and DSL providers. Also, determine what speed will really serve you in the long run by assessing what you'd like to do online. Then compare the various providers packages and speed plans to see how they all stack up side-by-side.

Take for example Verizon Fios, a service not nearly as popular as At&t Uverse but many say it's excellent. This new broadband platform was just introduced in 2007 and delivers some of the fastest internet speeds of all providers. Whether or not At&t Uverse is available in your area, reading a few Verizon Fios reviews may be of great interest to you.

There is a reason that ATT Uverse has gained so much popularity in recent years. First off, they offer amazing download speeds up to 24 Mbps. With speeds like that, you will be able to do anything online you can think of without disappointing load times or buffering. Also, their smart technology enables internet, television and telephone to work together seamlessly to increase your enjoyment.

Perhaps you already have a broadband subscription from a cable internet provider like Comcast or Time Warner Cable. Check out internet service provider reviews and see if perhaps you can bundle additional services to bring the cost of your subscriptions down.

Of course if you bundle your life insurance, homeowners plan and car insurance in one bundled plan, insurance companies will give you a pretty decent discount. Internet service providers are just like insurance companies - you can save if you bundle your telephone service, broadband and television subscriptions together.

With all of the available options to you in terms of plans and packages, you should be able to match the right download speed for your specific needs. Take a bit of time to read available reviews on your internet providers in your area.

Before You Move, Research Internet Service Providers

By Sanjay Kuprador

Although moving can be incredibly exciting, especially if you are buying your first home or moving to another city or state, it can also be a very stressful time. You already have to turn on or transfer utilities which is easy to do but you also have to find the time to research, internet service providers.

Even if you currently have online access, you will still find yourself asking, "Who are the internet service providers in my area?" so you know if your current service will even transfer. Not to mention, there's always plenty of sign up incentives available for new customers so you may not even want to transfer your current service anyway.

Your new neighbourhood may not allow for the same options as you currently have. So if you have Time Warner Cable now, you may only be able to get Comcast at your new location. This is largely due to different companies having different areas of coverage.

Also, if you are moving to a rural area, your choices may be limited. Quite often, DSL and even cable aren't options if you just bought yourself some farmland or a quiet chalet nestled in the mountains. Don't fret though, you still have options!

Thanks to satellite options, you are not going to have to go use the public library or spend your day in a caf just to enjoy fast internet speeds. Satellite internet service works by delivering broadband over open airwaves. Special equipment is required but if you sign up online, you can often find incentives to offset these fees.

The easiest way to pick internet service providers in your area is to find a website that allows you to search by zip code. This will give you an idea of what's available to you. If you're moving to an urban area, there's a good chance that you will have DSL, cable and fiber optics options to choose from.

Once you find out what service is available to you, you can then compare the pricing and packaging of each provider that interest you. Just make sure that you're not comparing a DSL service provider to a fiber optics service provider because that's like comparing apples to oranges.

Understand that DSL will be your least expensive option, cable will follow and then fiber optics is typically the most costly but it offers the fastest speeds. If you are interested in fiber optics options, consider signing up for a bundle package to get the best deal. You are going to need television and phone service in your new home anyway, right?
